Canada’s premiers – most of them, anyway – gathered in Quebec City this week to talk climate. But host Philippe Couillard, premier of Quebec, said provincial and territorial leaders can’t do it all on their own.
“(W)e call upon the federal government right now to start working with us, first technically, then with the ministers, in order to work together in establishing our targets for Paris and the way we’re going to present our situation, our plans in the future. There’s no way it can be done in isolation. One order of government cannot ask the other to do the job. It has to be done together.” – Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard Tuesday at news conference Tuesday.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper said last weekend that Canada’s emissions commitment for Paris will be ready in time for the G7 summit in June.
“We wanted to wait for a while to, at least, give the provinces the chance to have the conference they’re going to have and address some of their own target issues and we want to see the outcomes of that,” Harper said.
