2011 US Open - Day 13

Breaking Energy featured the Top 10 New York Energy Entrepreneurs back in June as part of an extremely popular top 10 series that ran during New York Energy Week. The entrepreneurs were chosen by their energy industry peers via an open nomination process that returned a robust list of candidates. Whittling the impressive list of innovators down to only 10 was an arduous process that felt as if many deserving candidates were left out. So this series features the remaining people nominated for the New York Energy Week list and describes their companies.

Panoramic Power

As electricity costs increase energy efficiency is becoming big business. Just as people want to control their home energy use with visibility into consumption patterns that identifies energy and cost savings opportunities, businesses are seeking to accomplish those same goals at the company-wide level. Electricity consumption can account for substantial portions of a company’s operating costs. Look at what internet companies like Google are doing to reduce data center energy costs. This next company in our series offers energy management solutions to a wide range of businesses.

American Residential Energy Verification System

If electricity is one of the larger bills received by residential homeowner, then heating and cooling costs are also high on the list of monthly expenses. This series has featured companies that specialize in reducing power consumption and this next company focuses on the heating/cooling efficiency. At the residential level, in order to achieve an efficiency rating that qualifies for the maximum central air conditioning rebate – $1,000 for Con Edison electricity customers – one must install equipment to a 16 Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating. For older homes, the upfront cost for that work can breach the $10,000 level, which leaves many selecting a cheaper, less efficient option. But the first step is analyzing the home’s heating and cooling performance to identify which potential upgrades would offer the best return on investment.

In their own words from the company’s website:

AREVS: American Residential Energy Verification System develops software applications and data sets for the Home Performance, Real Estate, and Energy industries.

Our Heating Energy Assessment Tool (HEAT) uses real world home energy consumption and costs to give you an accurate A-F grade of your home’s energy efficiency.

HEAT gives homeowners, energy auditors, certified home performance contractors, and licensed home inspectors a fast, accurate, affordable tool for assessing home energy performance.

Real estate professionals and mortgage brokers can use HEAT to estimate true home ownership costs (the PITE payment: Principal, Interest, Taxes, and Energy).

For government and nonprofit professionals, HEAT provides home performance data for quality assurance and program evaluation.

Homeowners use HEAT to get a baseline of their home’s energy consumption, costs, and overall performance.
