For years China has been known for its factories and for mass-producing everything from clothing and purses to tchotchkes and little American flags.

In recent years, China has used that same manufacturing expertise to race ahead in renewables.

This video, from World Bank Asia, looks at the exponential growth of the renewables sector in China over recent years.

Here are some facts from the World Bank:

1. Over the last five years, China has increased its renewable energy generation to 8.8% of total primary energy consumption, making it one of the world’s leading producers.

2. China is aiming to reduce its carbon emission intensity by up to 45% by 2020 compared to 2005 levels. Renewable energy will be an important part of the solution.

3. For the past decade, 90% of the Bank’s energy investments in China have supported the development of renewable energy and the acceleration of energy efficiency.
