The world hears every day of China’s staggering growth, its rampant urbanization, and its accruing economic and political power, but it is rare to see the unguarded faces and hear the unfiltered voices of the Chinese themselves even as the coverage of their country grows in volume and hysteria.

This video acts as an antidote to views of the Chinese, and their energy consumption, as simplistically monolithic in their all-consuming drive to development. It follows in short form a Chinese couple that has relocated to the bright lights of Shanghai from the countryside, like so many of their compatriots. The pair live and farm near the massive Waigaoqiao coal-fired power plant, and their discussion of the plant underlines the difficult and complex choices emerging economies are making as they struggle to meet their population’s needs without straining their environments beyond repair. For years China has been known for its factories and for mass-producing everything from clothing and purses to tchotchkes and little American flags.

In recent years, China has used that same manufacturing expertise to race ahead in renewables. Keep reading →

This video shows algae, which eats carbon dioxide and excretes oil, in action. Over time, the biomass falls away to the bottom and leaves the oil at the top.

This technology is part of a new movement towards green oil, including products like ethanol, biofuels and oils like this one from algae. While the number of companies working on extracting the oil has multiplied, few companies specialize in harvesting the algae itself. Keep reading →

Distributed emission-free electrical generation may seem like a far-off dream. But one community college in Chico, California has already made it come true.

Butte College, located 75 miles from Sacramento, announced last week that it was producing more than 100% of its needed electricity through on-site solar panels, making it the first college in the country to be ‘grid positive.’ Keep reading →

This video, made by Chesapeake Energy, is the second of a two-part video series that explains the science behind its method of hydraulic fracturing to extract underground natural gas that is captured in shale rock.

The visuals show high-pressured water cracking open the rock and allowing for natural gas to come up to the surface through the company’s well. The first video focuses instead on the actual process of drilling the initial well. Keep reading →

With all the recent hype about hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” for natural gas, and concerns about possibilities of underground drinking water contamination, it may be easy to lose sight of the real physical work that takes place and the technology involved.

This video is the first of a two-part Chesapeake Energy video series that uses graphics to portray exactly what is done in drilling and pumping water into an underground shale. Keep reading →

A lot of energy innovations have a “back to the future” feel about them, in which new methods of using traditional mechanisms are leveraged to make simple changes that result in significant gains.

Data centers consume as much as 3% of often-strained US power generation, the vast majority of it in keeping the huge buildings where servers are stored cooled with air conditioning to prevent the servers from overheating. Keep reading →

In this video, Ken DeFontes, President and CEO of Baltimore Gas & Electric, discusses his company’s approach to implementing smart grid technology into BG&E’s territory.

It is a unique look at smart grid technology from a utility perspective. Keep reading →

There isn’t (yet) an app for that.

In an effort to make sense of all its data while at the same time making electricity use more efficient, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has opened a contest for an iPhone application. Keep reading →

In this interview, David Eves, President and CEO of Public Service Company of Colorado, the Xcel Energy Company based in Colorado, provides a roadmap of smart grid and renewable energy initiatives will take over the course of the next couple years.
