A tanker carrying 1 million barrels of crude oil from Iraqi Kurdistan reportedly just rounded the Florida pan handle and is scheduled to land in Galveston, Texas. The buyer is unclear and Iraq’s official crude oil marketer SOMO is threatening to sue anyone purchasing the cargoes, which the government in Baghdad views as violating the country’s constitution. “The government of Iraq will reserve the right to sue any company, refinery or trader that buys the Iraqi crude that KRG is illegally offering,” an official from Baghdad’s state oil marketer SOMO told Reuters. It appears EPA may soon finalize Renewable Fuel Standard biofuel blending requirements, a fiercely-debated issue pitting ethanol and other biofuel producers against traditional petroleum refiners and the oil industry. EPA’s initially-proposed blending requirements for 2014 were lower than those for the year prior, marking the first decrease in the volume of biofuel mandated to be blended into the nation’s fuel supply. It now appears the threshold volumes could be increased, an outcome that would be challenged by the oil industry, who argues higher alcohol-based fuel concentrations can damage vehicle engines, among other complaints.
