The last few years have already seen a dramatic change in discourse on energy issues in the US and globally. But a complex present is laying the groundwork for a new, potentially cleaner, energy future.

Congressional deadlock is allowing two game-changing Environmental Protection Agency rules to pass into law, the Mercury & Air Toxics Standards (known as the Utility Maximum Achievable Control Technology, or MACT, rule) and the Cross-State Air Pollution Rule, CSAPR, which together will cost utilities and ratepayers billions of dollars. It’s not uncommon in the power sector to hear that executives are simply out of touch with consumers.

A recent IBM report which surveyed 1,716 US drivers and 125 industry executives, shows that this may also be true in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Furthermore EV executives might not be doing enough to connect with other industries. Keep reading →

Energy Secretary Steven Chu made no apologies Thursday for the $535 million loan guarantee the government made to now bankrupt solar panel maker Solyndra, saying the company’s collapse was unforeseeable and politics did not play a role in the approval process.

Chu defended the administration at a hearing on Capitol Hill against republican attacks that the Obama administration awarded the loan guarantee because one of the company’s main investors was a major fundraiser for Obama’s presidential campaign in 2008. Keep reading →

On her way from Washington DC to Ottowa, Alberta Premier Alison Redford stopped by the Canadian consulate in New York City on Tuesday to tell her side of the Keystone XL pipeline story.

CALMAC is a thermal energy storage company that uses off-peak electricity to freeze ice overnight. During the day, the power is gradually released to replace air conditioning which generally draws power from the grid during peak and most expensive electricity demand hours. Keep reading →

The second installment of the House Energy & Commerce Committee Jobs and Innovation Forum was convened to discuss the “natural gas revolution.”

The mostly Republican US Congressional Representatives truck a broadly enthusiastic tone about the economic potential of shale gas, with an emphasis from some speakers on safe operations and regulated drill operations. Six energy expert guests were invited to the discussion and mostly agreed that “fracking” has become a bumper sticker for natural gas opponents that does not actually relate to the risks and benefits of shale gas. A majority of the public still supports government funding for alternative energy research, although the degree of enthusiasm has decreased substantially since President Barack Obama took office, according to a new study conducted by the Pew Research Center.

The Pew report comes as congressional Republicans investigate solar company Solyndra, which received a multimillion-dollar loan guarantee from the Department of Energy, declared bankruptcy and became a focal point for the ire of those who oppose government subsidies for new forms of energy.
