A new report shows that China, considered the looming threat for competitors in the renewable energy business, may not stand a chance against the booming American solar sector.

Written by the Solar Energy Industries Association and GTM Research, US Solar Energy Trade Assessment 2011 claims that the US solar industry exported a net of $1.9 billion in solar photovoltaic (PV) and solar heating and cooling (SHC) components in 2010 globally, with $240 million of orders coming directly from China. Total exports totaled more than $5.6 billion, according to the report. Keep reading →

The price of US oil has dropped nearly 25% since hitting its highs this spring, yet gasoline is down just 10%. So a big drop should be coming, right?

Sorta. Drivers can expect a bit of relief at the pump over the next few months, but they shouldn’t look for too big a discount. Keep reading →

When it comes to building trust and community support, CEO of Texas-based Breitling Oil & Gas company Chris Faulkner, says the hydraulic fracturing community has failed miserably.

Faulkner founded Breitling in 2004 as a natural gas and oil company that exclusively taps North American shales and wells. He told Breaking Energy that although there has been quite a backlash against hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” for natural gas, he sees natural gas as a necessary resource for America’s energy future in terms of lowering carbon emissions and reduced dependence on coal. Though the US government may be stalling on energy policy, the Western Interconnect should move ahead with its own initiatives, said former Arizona state energy office director, currently Southwest representative of the Western Grid Group, and independent energy consultant Amanda Ormond, in a press conference call on Wednesday.

“We have a vacuum in energy policy and we want to West to get focused,” Ormond said. “Part of that is being globally competitive.” She said she hopes the West can develop products good enough to export them globally. Keep reading →

California. Massachusetts. Maybe even New Jersey. Those are the names that typically come to mind in clean energy.

Industry watchers now need to add Connecticut to the list. This July, the 10-year-old Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) was formally disbanded and transformed into the newly created Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority (CEFIA) that will be dedicated to promoting and developing clean energy and energy efficiency projects throughout the state. Opponents of the latest federal rule on transmission planning have re-emerged to lodge complaints as the regulation awaits implementation.

A group representing seven utilities, the Coalition for Fair Transmission Policy filed a request for a rehearing of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s Order 1000 on Tuesday, calling the regulation “inconsistent with its stated objectives.” Though it has long been policy for all the utilities of a geographic region to pay together for new transmission lines, new renewable energy projects that require extensive new infrastructure are straining the model. Promising the potential of widespread use, spray on solar panels are now a reality.

Cleantech research and development firm New Energy Technologies announced on Monday that its newest SolarWindow technology is now fully operational, complete with new and improved coatings that can enhance transparency and color of windows if covered in the solar spray. New Energy Technology’s President and CEO John Conklin said the improvements were critical for widespread customer adoption. Keep reading →
