The Novogratz Family Halloween Haunted House

Clearly Energy, an online resource for information on energy efficiency, has built a web-based “Energy Haunted House” for Halloween. We can’t say that it’s scary, but it is full of interesting energy factoids, and amusingly refers to greenhouse gas emissions as “human earth farts”.

Some of the things we found out:

  • “Refrigerators made in the 80s use about four times as much electricity and cost you $200 more each year than modern ones.”
  • “The average shower lasts about 8 minutes, so [a] low-flow shower head will save about $70 each year per person in your household.”
  • “A typical central a/c uses about 60 times more electricity to run than a typical ceiling fan, even on high…If you can cut your a/c use by just an hour a day you’ll end up saving over $50 over the summer.”

You can check out the house here. Happy Halloween!
