George Osborne Visits Scotland

Offshore oil field workers could be living in some fancy new digs by 2015, as Norwegian ship builder Salt Ship Design puts the finishing touches on a new vessel that generates its own waves, counteracting those occurring naturally at sea, to keep the vessel stable.

The technology would allow workers to stay on a ship located adjacent to the offshore rig, as opposed to on the rig itself. Off-rig accommodations are currently not possible because stationary ships are too rocky. Specially-designed tanks filled with water located around and beneath the ship stabilize the vessel in seas up to 5 meters or 15 feet. The company believes this could be “The future of offshore accommodation for oil rig workers.”
