Utility customers often don’t know how their power is priced and who makes the decisions that impact price, delivery, reliability and other important factors.

“Decisions made by PUCs [Public Utility Commissions] will influence the $100 billion in utility infrastructure investments expected each year between now and 2020, ranging from smart meters to transmission lines to new power plants. As a result, commission rulings affect the electric and natural gas bills paid by every business and household in the country…All told, there are nearly 200 PUC commissioners nationwide, but the lineup is constantly changing. Turnover among utility commissioners is about 25 percent a year; there have been 20 new commissioners seated so far this year,” the nonprofit Advanced Energy Economy said in a statement.

In an effort to cut through the noise, AEE created a portal – for all 50 states – that identifies who the commissioners are, how the organizations function and the portfolio of sources used to generate power.

The portal is easy to navigate and includes information like the average kilowatt-hour electricity price in each state and graphics depicting time series price and generation source data, as well as state legislature dynamics and much more. Check out your state!
