Duke Energy will build a second wind farm in Kansas, the utility announced Wednesday.

Located in Gray County, approximately 200 miles west of Wichita, the 131 MW ‘Cimarron II’ will generate enough electricity to power nearly 40,000 homes, and will contribute to the company’s already robust $1.5 billion renewable generation portfolio. Keep reading →

In a rather interesting move Cincinnati Bell (CB) has become the first telecom provider to offer affordable green energy to its customers under the new company Cincinnati Bell Energy (CBE).

CB has partnered with Viridian Energy, a leading green energy supplier, to deliver a 100% green product that is offered at a discount to the local utility. CBE is regionally sourced from wind power, resulting in a reportedly positive environmental and economic impact. The green energy will be made available to residents of southwestern Ohio, where it will be offered at a reported annual savings over the traditional utility rate. Keep reading →

It was a Town Hall meeting like no other.

Answering real-time questions from Twitter users around the country, submitted via the twitter-verse hashtag #AskObama, President Obama spent an hour today discussing the state of the American economy. He repeatedly mentioned the positive impact a focused energy policy could make on job creation and economic growth. Keep reading →

With the World Bank discussing a possible global tax on jet fuel, and governments increasingly cracking down on carbon emissions, technology geeks everywhere are scrambling to find creative ways to cut the use of conventional fuels.

Life sciences and materials sciences company DSM‘s latest invention is this lightweight airplane that is coated with carbon fiber composite resin to make it fly faster and use less fuel than conventional lightweight planes. Keep reading →

These super high-efficiency thin film photovoltaic panels were just released into the American market on Wednesday.

Designed by global solar PV firm Q-Cells, the panels come with a Power Appreciation Warranty of 25 years, with the panels guaranteed to operate at 100% performance for the first three years and at a loss of no more than .7% efficiency per year for every following year. Keep reading →

The White House‘s recent announcement of several American smart grid initiatives may have been more of a jump onto a rapidly moving train than an original idea.

Smart grid technology is in fact becoming increasingly popular around the world. IBM’s announcement of two new smart grid initiatives, in Brazil and Korea, points to a tremendous change that may be imminent in global electrical grids. Keep reading →

Fermentation is one of mankind’s oldest technological innovations, but it is also potentially the key to solving the evolving response to potential fossil fuel shortages.

A key “yeast technology” is at the heart of a takeover deal announced today by Dutch firm Royal DSM for fellow Dutch firm C5 Yeast BV from agricultural processing giant Royal Cosun. The C5 Yeast unit was part of Royal Nedalco, an alcohol unit divested by Cosun earlier this year. Keep reading →

It looks like a window, but this conference room is actually coated in solar panels.

Pythagoras Solar, whose conference room is shown above, was one of five Innovation Award winners last week in GE’s ecomagination contest. The California-based firm has developed a unique transparent photo-voltaic (PV) panel that acts as both a window and an electrical generator. In addition, the panel provides a thermal shading barrier that keep the sun’s heat out of buildings, ideally allowing them to use less energy for cooling during the summer. Keep reading →

Building for speed as well as a reliability is a perennial challenge for the energy industry. Keep reading →

Venture capitalists have repeatedly said they are excited to fund renewables. But they are worried about fledgling companies that have little track record.

GE’s ecomagination Challenge: Powering Your Home may succeed in solving this catch-22 by awarding $63 million to 10 winners, selected from among some 5,000 submissions. The innovation challenge also resulted in 22 new commercial partnerships with GE, all dedicated to smart grid technology and home energy efficiency. Keep reading →
