Hurricane Irene could mean power outages, but for how many? http://huff.to/nth6rj HuffingtonPost

The North Anna nuclear plant took a step toward normal today as Dominion Resources canceled the emergency alert declared yesterday when a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck just a few miles from the site.

But the quake is giving the Nuclear Regulatory Commission new reasons, and new data, to reassess whether older US nuclear plants have enough safety margins to withstand expected earthquakes. Keep reading →

Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz had it right about Kansas when she said, “There’s no place like home.”

As we saw during the Heartland Transmission Conference in Hutchinson recently, there’s no place like Kansas for high-voltage transmission. That’s because Kansas realized early on the benefits of developing its wind energy potential; it understood that new transmission will be critical to moving wind energy to market; and it figured out how to get it done. Doom and gloom are the default settings for the electricity sector, especially when it comes to challenging transmission projects, but Jay Caspary is having none of it.

“We’re just starting to see the benefits of a robust grid,” Caspary says. As Director of Transmission Development at the Southwest Power Pool, Caspary is tasked with working on strategic and emerging transmission issues at the regional transmission organization, much of which includes working with a host of partners and neighbors. It’s over, for the moment: ERCOT, the company that manages the Texas utility system, said Monday that it doesn’t expect peak electricity demand this week to surpass last week’s record levels.

The next generation of smart grid may be deployed first by the military.

The Department of Defense is the largest energy consumer in the US, and is facing many of the same challenges as the rest of the country with aging infrastructure and an increasing need to use renewable fuels. As the forces become more serious about meeting those challenges, their contractors are rushing to help them. Keep reading →

Last week I wrote about the planning reforms contained in Order 1000, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s landmark rule on transmission planning and cost allocation. Today’s blog looks at Order 1000’s cost allocation implications – basically, how to figure out who pays for new transmission development.

Clements’ previous blog, as well as this one, both appeared originally on the NRDC staff blog, Switchboard. Keep reading →

Natural gas generation will be used to guarantee grid stability in California as a group of companies break ground on a new power plant designed to complement renewable generation.

The CPV Sentinel 800 MW natural gas plant in Riverside Country, California, is funded by GE Energy Financial Services (GE), Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) and Diamond Generating Corporation (DGC). The $900 million project is being built by Gemma Power Systems California and is set to go into commercial operation by the summer of 2013. Keep reading →

Las Vegas lights haven’t dimmed, thanks to NV Energy, but the Nevada generator isn’t rolling in money this year; profits slumped due to a mix of comparatively cool weather in July and a ruling on the utility’s energy efficiency program accounting.

The Nevada economy is stabilizing, NV Energy President and CEO Michael Yackira said in discussing the company’s second-quarter 2011 results, released today. But the recovery will be measured in “years not months,” and the company, smaller and more correlated with Nevada’a economy since the sale of its California operations completed in January 2011, will remain focused on cost control.
