The idea of powering energy intensive facilities with inexpensive methane from on-site rigs is gaining traction in the Marcellus Shale region. And one of the reasons for the interest is the intensifying focus by exploration and production companies on natural gas liquids.

NGLs, which include propane, hexane, butane, and pentanes, are produced by fractionation after well-gas is processed to separate them from methane and ethane (which can only be liquefied through cryogenic treatment). Keep reading →

The natural gas industry in Pennsylvania is trying to disprove criticism of its fracking practices by preemptively issuing new voluntary guidelines even as the sector comes under greater scrutiny.

A group representing the natural gas industry in the Marcellus Shale issued its first recommendations on industry best practices in an effort improve its conservation ethic and deflect criticism that operators are damaging natural landscapes with wells, roads and compressor stations. As Marcellus and Utica Shale development continues ramping up, the need for gathering and transport infrastructure will become more intense. Located near the heart of this development, Pittsburgh is an ideal location for the Annual Marcellus Midstream Conference and Exhibition.

Monitoring shale gas drilling has been a central technology question for oil and gas companies seeking to take advantage of huge potential reserves in the US.

“A technology to remotely monitor conditions at energy-rich Marcellus Shale gas wells to help insure compliance with environmental requirements has been developed through a research partnership funded by the US Department of Energy,” the department announced today. Keep reading →

The proliferation of shale-gas production is causing a race to build the needed infrastructure to support production. As a result, producers, investors and capital providers like what they see. The ability to separate high-risk, high-reward, high-margin E&P activity from the less risky, but far more predictable, midstream business is attracting new capital expenditures.

The 3rd Annual Marcellus Midstream Conference & Exhibition will focus on the opportunities surrounding the building out of the infrastructure needed in non-traditional petroleum-producing regions. As capital is becoming easier to obtain, and operators are exploring their options in shale-gas recovery, your company will want to exhibit at the one conference designed to bring the latest information to the industry. When the US EPA found water contamination from hydraulic fracturing in Pavilion, Wyoming, the natural gas industry cried innocence.

Many pointed out that in the Wyoming case, hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) took place in very shallow areas close to fresh water aquifers. In most fracking locations, including the Marcellus shale, natural gas is extracted from shale thousands of feet below the fresh water, with rock separating the two layers. Keep reading →

Natural gas riches from Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale may undermine efforts to win public backing for sustainable-energy policies if people believe that the sudden surge in domestic gas has solved America’s energy-supply problems, officials warned on Wednesday.

Executives heading sustainable-energy initiatives said there’s a risk the public will lose interest in energy conservation and efficiency because the state’s booming natural gas industry is producing large quantities of cheap fuel that’s readily available for power generation, home heating and transportation while cutting greenhouse gas emissions. A natural gas compressor station in southern Pennsylvania exploded overnight Thursday, prompting the evacuation of about 150 people and raising concerns about safety amid the shale-gas boom that is spreading throughout the state.

A local resident reported a “loud noise” at the Artemas Compressor Station in Mann Township, Bedford County, at about 12:30 a.m., according to Shawn Trahan, a spokeswoman for Houston-based Columbia Gas Transmission, part of NiSource, which operates the station. Keep reading →

The Marcellus Shale has generated superlatives from all sides of the debate on shale-gas development.

For the booming industry, the massive natural gas play, stretching from New York to Virginia, is a “game changer” that will reduce US dependence on imported oil, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and generate thousands of jobs. Keep reading →
