Environmental group EDF is teaming up with 7 oil and gas companies to identify promising technology that can be used to detect methane – the main component of natural gas – leaking from pipelines, compressor stations, processing facilities and other infrastructure. “The organizations announced Thursday they have narrowed down their focus to five different technologies that will now be subject to more testing at the San Antonio-based nonprofit Southwest Research Institute. From there, the most promising devices will be subject to field testing and then eventually piloted at facilities run by participating companies. They include Shell, Anadarko, Apache Corp., BG Group, Hess Corp., Noble Energy and Southwestern Energy. [Fuel Fix]

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics’ data, Petroleum engineers experienced the highest increase in median annual salary since 2011 among geoscience-related occupations. “ABC News reported Aug. 18 that the petroleum engineer job ranked among the best-paying jobs of 2014. Petroleum engineers also have the highest starting salary of any of the engineering degrees offered, with an average starting pay of $89,000 and a mid-career salary of $159,900, according to USAToday.” [Rigzone]
