The energy industry – oil & gas sector in particular – is bracing itself for a massive wave of retirements over the short to medium term, which has been dubbed “The Great Shift Change.” As the industry prepares for this turnover, companies are looking to the next generation of candidates with skills ranging from finance, geology, engineering, law, etc.

Additionally, lots of exciting opportunities are opening up in various renewable energy sectors as technological advancements rapidly disrupt traditional utility business models. The energy efficiency business is also growing by leaps and bounds, as significant cost saving benefits associated with using less energy are an easy sell for most businesses.

Refinery Inspector

Location: Mandan, ND, US

This position inspects and evaluates refinery pressure equipment to assure safety, mechanical integrity and reliability by assessing effects of corrosion and other deleterious processes. Ensures compliance with pressure equipment laws and regulations and applicable industry codes, standards and recommended practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs inspections, non-destructive testing and fitness-for-service evaluations on refinery equipment (such as, but not limited to tanks, heaters, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, boilers, piping) to ensure mechanical integrity, safety and reliability. Ensures construction and repairs comply with codes, standards and industry practices.
  • Analyzes inspection findings. Prepares reports. Generates repair/upgrade/modification recommendations based on inspection findings. Communicates verbally and in writing to operating and maintenance staff in clear, organized and effective manner.
  • Collaborates with Engineering and Maintenance to establish inspection intervals per applicable industry codes, standards and recommended practices. Prepares inspection plan and intervals using electronic databases. Performs calculations of remaining life and corrosion rates.
  • Generates turnaround work scope with collaboration with Operations and Maintenance. Coordinates services of contract inspectors.
  • Assists in performing root cause analysis. Coordinates failure analysis activities and recommendations mitigation methods. Collaborates with Maintenance on development and implementation of risk-based routine and preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Maintains inspection databases. Ensures documentation is current, accurate, complete and compliant. Maintains organized and current equipment filing systems.

EDUCATION and Experience:

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 3 years pressure equipment inspection or non-destructive examination (NDE) experience required.
  • American Petroleum Institute inspection certifications and/or National Board Commissioned Inspector (through National Board of Boiler & Pressure Vessel Inspectors) preferred.

Associate Process Controls Engineer

Location: Mandan, ND, US

This position provides control systems’ engineering support for refinery operations and capital projects. With supervision, develops control systems including design, specification, programming, testing, documentation, and commissioning of DCS (distributed control systems), PLC (programmable logic controllers) and advanced control applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Configures and programs DCS (distributed control systems) applications. Provides input into development of project scope and prepares design reports, specifications and cost estimates. Builds distributed control systems operator interface process graphics to represent process flow and meet human factors standards. Troubleshoots interfaces and conducts loop-tuning.
  • Performs, with guidance, technical support for control system hardware, networking and software. Monitors performance and recommends modifications. Works with System Controls Specialists and Instrumentation/Electrical Technicians to diagnose/troubleshoot hardware and software problems and integration issues. Configures and tests control system and operator interfaces. Performs inspections and develops repair specifications in conjunction with Maintenance.
  • Provides capital and expense project support. Conducts feasibility and simulation studies evaluating economic value and impact on existing control systems’ installations. Reviews project documentation, drawings, equipment specifications and testing procedures. Prepares justifications.
  • Supports Operations with implementation of alarm management system and application of alarm database. Provides input to Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Management of Change (MOC) documentation.
  • Works extended hours including nights and weekends in process operations environment and during periods of inclement weather. Accesses areas of refinery requiring use of stairs and/or ladders to inspect critical equipment. Responds to upset conditions during off-hours.

EDUCATION and Experience

  • Minimum undergraduate engineering degree required.
  • Minimum 5 years refinery process engineering experience required with preference for process controls engineering experience.

Lead Project Engineer

Location: Dickinson, ND, US

Position Summary:

Manages all aspects of assigned projects including project scope, estimate, schedule, engineering design, equipment and material selection, project bidding, contractor selection, construction oversight, management of change, safety and environmental oversight and all other project tasks to

successfully accomplish project goals of liquid pipeline and terminal capital and expense projects in a safe, profitable, timely and efficient manner. Supports multiple capital and expense projects simultaneously within a managed budget and execution schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with affected departments during gated Front-End Loading (Apprise, Select and Define stages where projects are initiated, concepts selected and front-end definitions developed) to vet resource estimates, schedules, business benefits, environmental/health/safety impacts. Participates in technical reviews to ensure detailed engineering meets corporate engineering standards. Develops project feasibility and economic analysis to determine viability. Prepares decision support packages for review and approval by management.
  • Monitors and controls project performance during Project Execution stage to ensure project meets agreed quality, cost and time parameters in safe and environmentally sound manner. May have contractor oversight.
  • Collaborates with Project Controls on project administration (scheduling, estimating, cost management, schedule management etc) so that project resources are optimized. Conducts productivity analysis to identify and resolve critical variances so that project can achieve established objectives.
  • Coordinates with Procurement in development of contracting plan, including engineering and execution resources.
  • Identifies risk factors and ranks as of level of threat posed to project’s success during technical and location-oriented risk assessment. Develops and implements risk response plan to monitor and control risks throughout project lifecycle.
  • Maintains accurate and current project documentation. Develops start-up manuals, operating and emergency response procedures, training materials, etc.

EDUCATION & Experience:

  • Minimum undergraduate degree in engineering required.
  • Minimum 10 years experience in Terminal, Pipeline project and Project Management with a major oil and gas or transmission company is required.
  • Previous experience in DOT liquid pipeline and terminal design and piping fabrication, pipeline and terminal operations, basic pipeline hydraulics, and tank devices is preferred.

Document Compliance Specialist

Sungevity; Oakland, CA

The Document Compliance Specialist is a member of the Finance Team, specifically Finance Operations Department, with a primary responsibility to ensure contractual documentation remains in compliance with required guidelines to minimize financial and legal risk. This person will work closely with all departments across the company to provide contract compliance support for Sungevity’s solar products. They will audit legal documentation from post-sale through post-commissioning of the customer’s solar installation. This person has a hands-on role with Operations, Sales, Customer Service and Fund Partners: modifying contracts as needed, ensuring that required data is loaded into Sungevity’s CRM system, preparing documentation for investor submission, and completing post commissioning protocols. The ideal candidate must be detail oriented and be able to organize and prioritize with minimal supervision. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong administrative and customer service skills looking to transition into the solar industry.

OEM Business Development Manager

Shell; Houston, TX

The OEM BDM will work closely with the global OEM approval managers (GOAM) to execute the customer value proposition (CVP) and close lubricants factory fill and aftermarket business in the machinery and automotive component OEM spaces. This BDM role will be focused solely on hunting new OEM business in the General Manufacturing sector, so this must be a proven strength. Through rigorous prospecting, the preferred candidate will be accountable for developing a robust OEM pipeline, and work with the GOAMs to create and close sales contract agreements with selected OEMs. The BDM is also responsible for building strong relationships with key stakeholders to drive growth via the Shell CVP and coordinate and lead the execution with internal and external stakeholders to form partnerships with new clients.
