Utility Dive takes a look at the new study making headlines – and getting its author on the David Letterman Show – that says the US could generate all its power from renewable sources by 2050. Not to spoil it, but the answer – predictably – is 100% renewables is possible, if not very challenging. “While getting all of our power from renewable resources may be possible, the California study shows that getting even half of our power from renewables will require major changes to how the grid system runs.” [Utility Dive]

The proposed Freeport LNG export project moved a step closer recently when FERC’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement found no significant issues. “A draft federal review of Freeport LNG’s proposed liquefied natural gas export terminal found that the facility will not cause significant environmental harm, paving the way for possible approval for the project this year.” [Upstream]

The FT’s Lex Column comments on major German utility RWE’s decision to sell off its oil & gas business amid competition from subsidized renewable energy and cheap coal. “This makes Monday’s news that RWE would sell Dea for €5.1bn to a Russian investment group most welcome, if widely anticipated. RWE needs risk pulled out, and the best way is to build the balance sheet.” [Financial Times]
