Germany’s rapid renewable energy production increase has some officials concerned about the country’s economic health, as rising consumer energy costs and government subsidies appear unsustainable. New German Energy Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, proposed cutting renewable energy subsidies in his first major policy speech. “We need to control the expansion of renewable energy, and not have the anarchy that we have seen previously,” Mr. Gabriel said. “We need to reduce costs so that it remains affordable.” [New York Times]

Global oil demand is expected to increase this year by 1.3 million barrels per day, according to the latest IEA Monthly Oil Market Report. Opec crude supply increased for the first time in four months in December. “Saudi Arabia and the UAE led the gain, while Iraq was the only member to post a decline.
