During a Cleveland steel plant tour, President Obama highlighted US energy as a success story.

“We [have] invested in new American technologies to reverse our addiction to foreign oil, double wind power, double solar power, produce more oil, produce more natural gas, and do it all in a way that is actually bringing down some of our pollution, making our entire economy more energy-efficient,” the president is reported as saying in a speech at the factory.

The pollution comment ostensibly refers to recent greenhouse gas emissions reductions associated with fuel switching from coal to natural gas in the power sector. However, recent statistics indicate coal has been regaining some market share as natural gas prices rebound slightly from historic lows. That means carbon emissions could be on the rise as well.
