China Still Ranks Low On Environmental Safety

Climate Activist Bill McKibben says that a campaign to encourage divestment from fossil fuels is gaining momentum. If effective, it could have a huge impact on the oil, gas and coal industries, but it remains unclear how far-reaching it will prove to be. Brown University refused to divest from the 15 largest US coal companies, and Harvard put out a statement saying that fossil fuel divestment is neither warranted nor wise. [The Guardian]

The New York Times has a piece on the perseverance of oil producers in getting their product to market, Keystone XL pipeline or no. “Even if President Obama rejects the pipeline, it might not matter much. Oil companies are already building rail terminals to deliver oil from western Canada to the United States, and even to Asia.” [New York Times]

The European Commission has adopted new standards for toilets and urinals intended to blunt their environmental impact. “The commission estimates the move could save over 2,500 liters per toilet per year.” [Quartz]
