From motorbikes to motorboats, solar has been increasingly powering devices small and large.

With some nudging from the Brazilian arm of a solar company, Gehricher Ecoluz do Brasil, the Pituacu soccer stadium in Bahia in the Salvador state of Brazil will now be powered by the sun as well.

The solar modules, to be installed by the German photovoltaics company Gehrlicher Solar AG, will output a total of 403 kilowatt peak power voltage (kWp), 238 kWp from Uni-Solar flexible, light-weight, thin-film panels and 165 kWp from Yingli Solar monocrystalline panels.

The project was initiated by Gehricher Ecoluz do Brasil, a joint venture between the Gehrlicher solar company and the environmentalist group, Ecoluz Participacoes SA.

“We are very pleased to have convinced Coelba with our concept,” said Guillermo Barea Herranz, chairman of Gehrlicher Ecoluz Solar do Brasil’s board of directors. He said the group hopes to install solar panels on all 12 of the World Cup stadiums.

Construction of the photovoltaic system in Brazil will begin in September and is scheduled to be completed by December. Brazilian utility Coelba will manage the project.
