With companies using millions to develop the most efficient and cheap renewable technology, many customers may have retreated to the backseat of energy innovation.

But one consumer, Ayub Khan Pathan, made his own solar-powered electric scooter.

It took him three years and cost 27,000 Indian rupees (approximately $600) to build and can cover a distance of approximately 40 miles with a single full charge.

He is pictured here with his nephew, Imran Khan Pathan, who helped him develop the scooter, as they drive in the streets of Mumbai, India on May 31.
