Smart Grid Goes Viral

A once far-fetched idea may soon become a staple of utility information management.

Smart meters will now be everywhere from Long Island and Kansas to Maui and South Korea.

The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) announced on Monday that it would be using eMeter‘s EnergyIP smart meter in order to install a smart grid for the National Grid utility.

“eMeter’s proven track record in the utility industry and its history of successful deployments of Smart Grid meter data management systems make them an ideal partner for LIPA,” said LIPA COO Michel Hervey.

The eMeter Energy IP platform will give consumers direct information about their energy usage, costs and billing. It is being deployed with an accompanying web portal that will integrate and display the information online.

eMeter will also be deployed in Maui by Hawaiian Electric Company and the state government-in collaboration with the Japan-based New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), as part of a smart grid demonstration project. NEDO is investing $37 million in the project and has hired six Japanese technology companies to install the meters.

“Like Hawaii, Japan is looking for ways to better use clean energy on smaller electric systems that serve individual islands,” said Hawaiian Electric executive vice president Robbie Alm. “By pooling our resources and our expertise, we can develop solutions that will help significantly increase our use of clean energy sources.”

The Maui grid is already 15% fed with renewable fuels, but the project is aimed to further reduce carbon emissions and enhance grid efficiency.

In Korea, with the full support of the country’s National Assembly, Samsung SDS has joined forced with eMeter with the goal of 100% smart meter deployment by 2030. It will require a $21.6 billion investment.

“Emeter’s partnership with Samsung further extends eMeter’s partner ecosystem with access to AMI vendors and upstream technologies such as SAP and others that support the market,” said eMeter VP of World Wide Alliances, Lisa Caswell.

“We look forward to building on the partnership throughout the rest of the Asian market,” she said.
